August 6 and 9 will mark the 77th anniversary of the U.S atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As the aging Hiroshima and Nagasaki A-bomb survivors (hibakusha) continue to passionately appeal for a world without nuclear weapons based on their conviction that “no one shall ever again suffer as we have,” let us honor their perseverance by taking part in August 6 and 9 events in your region and on online. Here’s a selection of actions planned by UFPJ member groups and allies.

“Making the Unthinkable Impossible: Abolish Nuclear Weapons!” This year’s virtual rally at the Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab in northern California will be broadcast August 6 and August 9, from 9:00 am – 10:30 am PDT. The program will feature Daniel Ellsberg, Nagasaki A-bomb survivor, Nobu Hanaoka, Russian peace and democracy activists, Oleg Bodrov (in Russia) and Natalia Mironova, international anti-nuclear power activist, Marie Inoue, Livermore Lab watchdog, Marylia Kelley and more, with music by Emma’s Revolution and Benjamin Mertz. “Beneath the Mushroom Cloud,” August 8, 7:00 pm EDT. On the 77th anniversary of the American bomber’s flight to Nagasaki, join North Carolina Peace Action as award-winning author Susan Southard takes us under the mushroom cloud.
