August 6th marks the 74th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It is also George Friday’s 60th birthday. In the early days of UFPJ, George was a National Co-chair; today she is our National Organizer, UFPJ’s only paid staff, and absolutely vital to promoting peace and justice activism in communities across the nation. We must raise $10,000 to assure George’s job for the remainder of 2019.
George grew up poor in the rural South and faced tangible racism. In August 1963, the Grand Dragon of the KKK, Bob Jones, lived just one county over. But, at age 6, when George learned about the bombing of Hiroshima, she began thinking that it would be good to become a global peace activist working for a world of love—without war, hatred, racism, poverty, or nuclear weapons. “Helping peace happen far away was something to imagine when you were hungry,” George remembers. And indeed, on August 6, 2005, the 60th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing, George traveled to Japan, met with A-bomb survivors and supporters of nuclear abolition from around the world, and at a rally in Hiroshima 10,000 peace activists sang “Happy Birthday” to her!
This August 6th, please join in a 60th birthday gift to George by helping to keep her employed. Give UFPJ $6, $60, or $6,000! Please consider a recurring contribution so we know we will have George with us guiding our crucial work with the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, continuing to oppose war and nuclear arms, and recognizing how peace abroad and justice at home must be united goals.
Happy Birthday George and Thank You!
