United for Peace and Justice is proud to be a partner in the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival. On Saturday June 23, UFPJ’s National Co-conveners Jackie Cabasso and Terry Rockefeller joined thousands of people at the U.S. Capitol Mall to let our elected leaders know that we will no longer allow racism, militarism, and extreme materialism to keep poor and disenfranchised people down.
The event recognized the close of 40 Days of Action that signaled a New and Unsettling Force that emerged following 6 weeks of political education, action, and community building. The D.C. rally was not the end of the Poor People’s Campaign, but rather the launch of its next phase, returning to the states. UFPJ will continue to be active with the campaign, along with our other priority work.
A season of nonviolent direct action to transform the nation’s political, economic, and moral structures has begun. Building on weeks of protest in state capitols across the nation, Poor People’s Campaign activists took turned their focus on the Department of Justice, The Department of Education, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Now we must move forward together, not one step back,
