A remarkable grassroots mobilization over the past two months has blunted partisan efforts to block the nuclear agreement with Iran. (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action JCPOA) With 42 Democratic Senators now supporting the deal, it appears that the Obama Administration will have sufficient votes to move forward with the plan. Together with our national allies, United for Peace and Justice has been a strong advocate of this encouraging turn towards diplomacy, and away from war.

But our work is not done. It is vitally important that individuals and member groups within our network continue in support of this nuclear agreement. As early as Friday, there will be a vote in the House of Representatives and in the Senate on a motion to disapprove the agreement. This will be a test of strength. As events have so far unfolded, this has been a huge defeat for AIPAC and its associated pro-Netanyahu lobbyists. It is no surprise that they are already formulating alternative legislation to undermine implementation of the accord. The size of Friday’s vote matters.
This nuclear agreement with Iran can be a vital first step in moving towards a nuclear-free Middle East. It can also open a door to a new American approach to the region, which privileges negotiation and compromise over a reliance on military force. United for Peace Justice remains committed to work with groups across the country to turn US policy away from the devastating wars of the past 14 years.

Immediate Steps Needed Now:

Attend one of the hundreds of peace vigils across the country scheduled for Thursday September 10 urging Congress to stand behind the nuclear deal. To find an event near you, go tohttp://civic.moveon.org/event/events/index.html?action_id=368

Call your Senators and Representative now and let them know you strongly support the nuclear agreement with Iran.
Check out this list to find out what position they have taken.

If the elected official is already a supporter, it’s important to call and express your appreciation.. If the official is still on the fence or a stated opponent, let them know that you consider this a crucial issue –and as a constituent you want him or her to stand up for diplomacy
