To commemorate the death of her son Casey, and to demand real change in Washington DC and the nation, Cindy Sheehan has initiated a cross country bicycle peace ride from Vacaville, CA to Washington DC. Her son Casey is buried in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery in Vacaville.
Casey was killed on April 4, 2004 while serving in the U.S. Army in Iraq. In August 2005 Cindy traveled to President Bush’s Prairie Chapel Ranch, just outside Crawford, Texas, demanding a meeting with the President. She was rebuffed so she, other Gold Star parents and hundreds of activist refusing to give up established Camp Casey near Bush’s ranch in an attempt to force a meeting. The rest is peace history as the action attracted international attention and gave the peace movement new energy with millions around the world taking notice of this grieving mother confronting the President.
