Listen to the Women!

To: President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush

We, as mothers, sisters, daughters, grandmothers and aunts, urge you to listen to the women's voices for peace. We do not believe that reliance on militarism, such as attacking Iraq, makes the lives of our children, our country or our planet more secure. In fact, we are convinced that our safety in the wake of September 11th would be enhanced by shifting from war-making to a life-affirming national agenda.

We therefore urge you to:

  • Direct the $200 billion earmarked for war with Iraq to programs that promote
the health, education, housing and the welfare of our children.

  • Safeguard the civil liberties of all people in the US, respecting the race, ethnicity, and religion of every individual.

  • Pursue disarmament both at home and abroad.

  • Abide by international laws and treaties, rejecting US unilateralism and military aggression as a means to resolve international conflicts.

  • Protect the people and resources of the earth by investing in clean energy and reducing our dependence on oil.

  • Devote our nation’s vast wealth and resources to the eradication of poverty.

We, the undersigned, want national leadership that reflects the values that we women hold dear: peace, compassion, generosity, and recognition of the interconnectedness of the whole human family.
