Dialogues Against Militarism ~ Ice Cream Social Fundraiser
Sunday, August 23rd 2009 3:00pm
Dialogues Against Militarism ~ Ice Cream Social
Fundraiser

Dialogues Against Militarism (D.A.M.) was created from the belief that the power of conversation can serve as a means to develop new ideas and advance the possibilities of moving beyond militarism. D.A.M.’s mission is to foster free and open conversations that engage and challenge issues of militarism through the relation of experiences by those who have been on its front lines. It is hoped through these dialogues that together we can build a better world.

A speaking tour is being organized in Israel/Palestine made up of US and Israeli ex-soldiers to discuss their experiences and strategize for ways to challenge militarism in their respective societies. This forum will be used as a means of education and mobilization in the fight against war and occupation.

We need funds to support these courageous former US soldiers. Join the fundraiser, eat delicious ice cream and meet the young ex-soldiers who will be traveling to Israel/Palestine to build people-to-people ties. http://www.againstmilitarism.org/

DAM TEAM

Stephen Funk, In 2003, US Marine Stephen Funk became the first person in the military to publicly denounce the War in Iraq and refuse to serve. He applied for conscientious objection and traveled the country for several months to speak out against the war, encouraging military service members to examine their own beliefs about the war, informing others about conscientious objection, and to caution young people to think twice before enlisting. For his public stand he was sentenced to six months in military prison, demoted to private, fined, and given a bad conduct discharge. Since being released he continues activism with several groups, primarily as the San Francisco chapter president of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Sarah Lazare, is an organizer and Program Coordinator with Courage to Resist, a national organization that supports members of the US military who refuse orders to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. She is also a freelance writer and columnist, with articles that have appeared in publications ranging from Adbusters to ZNet, and is currently co-editing a book about GI resistance against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sarah has a background in labor, community, and anti-war organizing and has done such organizing in the several cities where she has lived, including New York City, Washington, D.C., and Springfield, Illinois.

Matthew Edwards, is a conscientious objector from this most recent war in Iraq. He was discharged on March 19, 2003, the first day of the bombing campaign in Iraq, from the United States Marine Corps. Prior to his discharge he was held by the Marines for 5 months and was subjected to harsh and often illegal treatment that included food and sleep deprivation and physical mistreatment that culminated in a broken hip and finally a medical discharge. He lived in Damascus, Syria for just shy of one year where he lived, worked, and studied, picking up conversational Arabic. While there he was exposed to the refugee and social crises associated with the war and occupation of Iraq. Matt currently lives in San Francisco organizing with Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW).

David Zlutnick, has spent the last several years involved in social justice movements, mostly focusing on labor struggles and war opposition, and most recently housing justice. For several years he was involved in counter-recruitment and demilitarization campaigns aimed at getting the military and war profiteers out of high schools and colleges as well as participating in direct action organizing. David also has a strong history within independent media, both written and visual. He has worked with numerous independent print publications and his writing has been published in numerous media outlets, including The Friendly Fire Collective, of which he is a founding member.

Eddie Falcon, served four years in the Air Force as a C-130 Loadmaster. He was assigned to the 50th Airlift Squadron based at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas. He deployed to Manas Air Base in Kyrgyzstan, moving cargo, troops, senators, Special Forces units, medical evacuees, Afghan locals, vehicles, and more in and out of Afghanistan in the winter of 2003 and the winter of 2004. He was also forward deployed to Al Udeid, Qatar, to move troops, cargo, etc. in and out of Iraq. Falcon received an honorable discharge in December 2005 and is now using the Montgomery GI Bill to major in Spanish at San Francisco City College. He now studies Spanish at the Complutense University in Madrid. Since his discharge, Falcon has been involved in anti-war activities back home. He helped organize and testified in Winter Soldier San Francisco.

"People were hungry, literally. There was a shortage of everything here, including food, and we actually ran out for a couple of days." ~ John Ging, Head of Gaza operation, UN Relief and Works Agency

Screening of Encounter Point
Wednesday, February 25th 2009 7:00 PM
Just when the world is losing hope about the possibility of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict comes ENCOUNTER POINT. Created by a Palestinian, Israeli, North and South American team, ENCOUNTER POINT moves beyond sensational and dogmatic imagery to tell the story of an Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian bereaved brother who risk their safety and public standing to press for an end to the conflict. They are at the vanguard of a movement to push Palestinian and Israeli societies to a tipping point, forging a new consensus for nonviolence and peace. Perhaps years from now, their actions will be recognized as a catalyst for constructive change in the region. ENCOUNTER POINT is a film about hope, true courage and implicitly about the silence of journalists and politicians who pay little attention to vital grassroots peace efforts.

WASHINGTON DC RESIDENTS SUPPORTING THE OPPRESSED

Annual Al-Quds Day Rally for Justice in Palestine and the Oppressed Everywhere

Washington DC Friday September 3, 2010 11:00am at Dupont Circle, Washington DC

Al-Quds is Arabic for Jerusalem, the Holy Land. Yawm-al Quds or Al-Quds Day is a day of solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians in their struggle against the Zionist-Apartheid system of Israel. Al-Quds Day also extends beyond Palestine to support all oppressed people in their struggles across the world. All over the world rallies and marches are held on this day, the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadhan in order to pledge solidarity with those seeking peace through justice.

As former United States President Jimmy Carter has stated in his book, “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid”:

“When Israel does occupy this territory deep within the West Bank, and connects the 200-or-so settlements with each other, with a road, and then prohibits the Palestinians from using that road, or in many cases even crossing the road, this perpetrates even worse instances of apartness, or apartheid, than we witnessed even in South Africa.”

This day is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the oppressed in their struggles all over the world, from Palestine to Iraq, from Congo to Honduras and from China to right here in our own backyards in the United States. On September 3, 2010 at 11 am, join us and other local community leaders and activists for this historical protest and pledge your solidarity with those seeking a just peace in Palestine and around the world.

RSVP  • Bethlehem Besieged
Tuesday, December 9th 2008 7:00 pm
This month, millions of Americans will see images of ancient Bethlehem in nativity scenes celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Skip Schiel, a professional filmmaker and photographer, has traveled and photographed in Israel and Palestine over the last five years. His latest slide show portrays the reality of Bethlehem today, a city under military occupation, surrounded by a 25-foot high concrete wall and checkpoints which restrict movement in and out of the city.

Skip Schiel has been documenting the Palestinian and Israeli reality through photographs and journal postings since 2003—work with a better feel for the detailed texture of life in Gaza and the West Bank than any appearing in US media.

This Palestinian Life - Stories of Nonviolent Resistance . . . a film by Philip Rizk
Tuesday, June 23rd 2009 7:00 PM
In THIS PALESTINIAN LIFE, director Philip Rizk uses an oral history approach to highlight the stories and perspectives of Palestinian villagers and Bedouin. This method avoids using "experts" to interpret the broader Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Rather, the film's anthropological and ethnographic method portrays the daily life of Palestinian communities in order to explore, in greater depth, how Palestinian life is being undermined by the pressure of Israeli occupation.

Upon viewing the film, we will hear from the film's director, Philip Rizk (via Skype) and Kathy Kelly, Voices for Creative Non-VIolence, who visited Gaza in January of this year. Questions and comments from the audience will be moderated by Rabbi Brant Rosen, spiritual leader of the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation in Evanston.

RISKING IT ALL FOR PEACE: Stories of Occupation and Solidarity from Iraq to Palestine
Friday, February 19th 2010 7:00pm
Organic farmers Art and Peggy Gish work as human rights activists for Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT), an international organization "committed to reducing violence by getting in the way." They have been getting in the way of injustice and violence from Hebron to Baghdad.

Peggy was in Iraq as peace advocate and witness before, during and following the 2003 U.S. invasion. In 2007 she was kidnapped but released after only 2 days because she showed her captors a photo of her husband Art standing in front of an Israeli tank which had been smashing the central market in Hebron.

Art Gish has been part of CPT in Hebron since 1995, getting in the way of Israeli military and settler violence against Palestinian civilians. He led a two day training course in nonviolence attended by Rachel Cory. Art is the author of several books, including Hebron Journal: Stories of Nonviolent Peacemaking. Peggy is the author of IRAQ, A Journey of Hope and Peace, a moving story of the horrors of war yet never dimming her vision of peace.

The Event is Free and Open to the Public!

RSVP  • THE BEDOUINS VS. THE STATE OF ISRAEL: From Freedom to Fear
Sunday, July 12th 2009 1 p.m.
Bette Hoover recently returned from a trip to the Negev Desert where she stayed with a Bedouin family. She is a U.S. contact for the work of BUSTAN, www.bustan.org, an organization that works to bring environmental justice to the Negev and human rights to Bedouins.

The once proud indigenous people of the desert known as the Bedouins are now the poorest of Israeli citizens and struggle for survival. The State of Israel has seized their land for industry, electrical plants, prisons, military testing and Jewish-only communities. Tens of thousands live in unrecognized villages that don’t appear on the map and don’t receive any governmental services.

Come see Bette’s photos, hear about her experiences, and find out how you can add your voice to those speaking up for justice and peace in the region.

In almost 2 weeks of attacks on the occupied Gaza Strip, Israel has killed at least 760 Palestinians and injured at least 3,100 with U.S. weapons in violation of U.S. law.

Israel's attacks come after a brutal siege of the Gaza Strip, which has created a humanitarian catastrophe of dire proportions for Gaza's 1.5 million Palestinian residents by restricting the provision of food, fuel, medicine, electricity, and other necessities of life.

Israeli forces are massacring people in Gaza right now with our money. We are obligated to stop it:

* Israel is dropping GBU-39 small diameter bombs on the Gaza Strip. These bombs contain uranium oxide and have left behind radioactive contamination in places such as Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. In September 2008, Boeing in St. Charles, MO received a $77 million contract to send 1,000 GBU-39 to Israel.

* On Dec.30, the Israeli navy rammed a boat carrying medical supplies to Gaza. On Jan. 3 Israel began shelling Gaza from navy ships. In July 2008, the U. S. signed a contract to transfer $1.9 billion of naval combat ships to Israel. Last year, the U.S. signed a $1.3 billion contract with Raytheon to transfer to Israel 1 000’s of TOW, Hellfire, and "bunker buster” missiles.

Call On Congress to:
1) establish an unconditional immediate cease-fire
2) ensure complete access of humanitarian goods to the Gaza Strip and lift Israel's siege;
3) hold Israel accountable for its misuse of U.S. weapons as required by the Arms Export Control Act and Foreign Assistance Act
Representatives Lacy Clay (314.367.1970), Russ Carnahan (314.962.1523), Todd Akin (314.590.0029),
Senators Claire McCaskill (314.367.1364), Kit Bond (314.725.4484).

Tell McCaskill to condemn Israel's attack on the Gaza Flotilla‏
Tuesday, June 1st 2010 4:00
Last evening Israeli commandoes dropped from a helicopter onto the Turkish passenger ship, Mavi Marmara, and brutally attacked the Free Gaza Flotilla, a humanitarian ship filled with activists, civilians and much needed supplies.

In response, the St. Louis Palestine Committee is calling for a gathering outside of Sen. Claire McCaskill's office tomorrow, Tuesday, June 1st from 4-6 p.m. to demand the following:

We demand that the U.S. Congress:

*Condemn Israel's attack on the Gaza humanitarian mission in no uncertain terms, and demand the immediate release of the illegally captured boats, allowing them to continue to Gaza unimpeded.

*Immediately cut all US tax dollars going towards the the Israeli military and it's illegal occupation. ( In July 2008, the United States signed a contract worth $1.9 billion to transfer the latest-generation of naval combat vessels to Israel at U.S. taxpayer expense. Currently, Congress is in the process of appropriating a record $3.2 billion in military aid to Israel this budget year.)

*Demand that Israel treat the wounded in civilian hospitals, notify their families and embassies directly and allow the latters' access to them and pay for travel to Israel for family members of those hospitalized as well as their stay in Israel.

* Demand that Israel immediately lift the siege of Gaza.

*Similarly, immediately open the West Bank to free movement of people and goods to and from Jordan.

Rally & March to Stop Israel's Attacks on Gaza & Open The Border Crossing
Saturday, January 31st 2009 12:00 pm
Stop Israel's Attacks on Gaza & Open The Border Crossings!

Boycott Starbucks and all businesses that support Israeli Apartheid!

Join us to call for an end to Israel's repeated violations of the ceasefire & an end to the criminal blockade that is preventing desperately needed humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza.

Israel has refused to abide by the ceasefire once again. This past week, Israeli troops & the Israeli Navy have repeatedly attacked Gaza, killing & wounding several civilians, and Israeli troops raided Gaza on Jan. 27.

This is being done with U.S. weapons, funding, & diplomatic support. A headline in Israel's Haaretz today read "Clinton: Israel has right to respond to Gaza rocket attacks" referring to the U.S. condoning of Israel's recent assault on the unarmed civilian population of Gaza.

There have also been continued Israeli invasions into towns & villages in the occupied Palestinian West Bank where they have wounded, kidnapped, & detained people, including children. This is in addition to the daily humiliations & hardships caused by Israeli military checkpoints & occupation.

Haaretz also reported today, Jan. 27, about the Israeli military raid into Gaza that,

"The Israel Air Force attacked targets in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday afternoon, hours after an Israeli soldier was killed and three others were wounded in a Palestinian-rigged bomb attack near the border.

Palestinian witnesses also said by late Tuesday afternoon that Israeli tanks could be seen rolling into the Gaza Strip.

A Palestinian was reportedly killed in ensuing clashes between IDF soldiers and Gaza militants in the area. Heavy gunfire was audible along the border in central Gaza and Israeli helicopters hovered in the air, firing bursts from their machine guns, Palestinian witnesses said.

Gaza medical workers identified the Palestinian killed as a farmer.

Later Tuesday, the Israel Air Force targeted a motorcycle in the southern Gaza Strip, critically wounding two people, Hamas and Palestinian medical officials said. One of those wounded was a Hamas militant, said group sources."

We will also condemn the U.S. air strikes that took place over the weekend that killed civilians in Afghanistan & Pakistan.

In 2007 President Obama said, "Our job is to rebuild the road to real peace and lasting security throughout the region…Our job is to do more than lay out another road map." More than two years later, we have yet to see policies implemented that will lead to peace and justice. We, as peace activists, should be asking our government to play a leadership role in bringing about the changes necessary in Israel-Palestine and the region.

Join us as we discuss the dire need for changes in U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. What changes are essential to promote true peace, security, and most of all, justice in the region?

When: Tuesday, July 28, 2009
Time: 7pm
Where: Judson Memorial Church, 239 Thompson Street at West 3rd Street

Featuring:
Issam Aburaya, Palestinian Israeli citizen and Assistant Professor at the Religious Studies Department, Seton Hall University.
Daniel Fleshler, Author of Transforming America's Israel Lobby (Potomac Books), Board Member of Americans for Peace Now and Advisory Council Member of J-Street.
