Eufaula, Alabama

Middle East Peace Rally
10:00a.m., CST
Monthly Event
The event will move from city to city, on a monthly cycle. Once some resolution has been reached in Palestine, we will focus on Darfur, and so on and on.
The event is in protest of the systemic
agenda of genocide, perpetrated by the IDF against the hapless Palestinian people in Gaza and THe Transjordan. For more than sixty years, the great powers of the world have acquiesced to the money of the Zionists, and it is now time to repudiate that policy. The peace of the world is at stake, and we must not miss this opportunity to allow another holocaust, primarily a nuclear holocaust, which will destroy all of us.

Wednesday, January 28th 2009 7:30 pm
KPFA Radio 94.1 FM presents:

GWEN IFILL
“The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama”

Hosted by Neil Henry

Tickets: $12 advance, $15 door, at supporting bookstores
Or on line: www.kpfa.org/events

Gwen Ifill is the well-known PBS moderator and managing editor of Washington Week and senior correspondent of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Before coming to PBS, she was chief congressional and political correspondent for NBC News, and had been a reporter for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, and Boston Herald American.
In THE BREAKTHROUGH, this veteran journalist provides an in-depth investigation of black political power in a post-Civil Rights era of promise and peril. She surveys the American political landscape and sheds new light on the impact of Barack Obama's stunning presidential campaign, while introducing the many emerging young African American politicians forging bold new paths to political power.
Ifill argues that the black political structure formed during the Civil Rights movement is giving way to the generation of men and women who are the direct beneficiaries of the struggle of the 1960s. She offers incisive, detailed profiles of such prominent leaders as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and U.S. Congressman Artur Davis of Alabama, and also covers up-and-coming figures from across the nation. Drawing on interviews with power brokers like Senator Obama, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Vernon Jordan, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and many others, as well as her own razor-sharp observations and analysis of such issues as generational conflict and the "black enough" conundrum, Ifill shows why this is a pivotal moment in American history.
Neil Henry is a professor and dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley. His career has included 16 award-winning years at the Washington Post as a metro, national, and investigative reporter, and a foreign correspondent based in Africa. He has written for Newsweek, Mother Jones, and Smithsonian. He earned his BA degree in political science from Princeton, and his Master's in journalism from Columbia. Dean Henry is the author of two books. The first, Pearl's Secret, published in 2001, was a well-received memoir investigating his family's interracial history dating back to the antebellum South. His most recent book was published last year and is entitled: American Carnival: Journalism Under Siege in an Age of New Media.

RSVP  • Robert Jensen: Beyond Elections
Tuesday, January 13th 2009 7:30 p.m.
Robert Jensen takes us:

Beyond Elections - Sustaining Our Commitments to Justice and Sustainability

Many in the United States -- and around the world -- are rightly celebrating the coming end of eight years of reactionary rule in Washington. But politics is more than elections. Where should people concerned with social justice and ecological sustainability focus our attention during the Obama administration? What long-term vision should inform our short-term choices? Writer and activist Robert Jensen will discuss how we should analyze the contemporary problems we face, articulate a vision for the future, and act on those ideas in the coming year.

Robert Jensen is a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin and board member of the Third Coast Activist Resource Center. His latest book, All My Bones Shake, will be published in 2009 by Soft Skull Press. He also is the author of Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity (South End Press, 2007); The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race, Racism and White Privilege (City Lights, 2005); Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity (City Lights, 2004); and Writing Dissent: Taking Radical Ideas from the Margins to the Mainstream (Peter Lang, 2002).

Thursday, January 29th 2009 7:30 p.m.
Reese Erlich

Veteran foreign correspondent and radio journalist

Dateline Havana: The Real Story of U.S. Policy and the Future of Cuba

A new book release event and book-signing

Expertly researched and deftly reported, Dateline Havana is a probing exposé of U.S. policy and the future of Cuba on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. Covering art, music, and Cuban politics, Reese Erlich creates a tableau that is at once moving and informative.

Reporting from Havana and Miami, he explores Cuba’s strained history with the United States and the power of the Cuba Lobby. From Miami-based terrorists in Cuba to the green revolution in Cuban agriculture, he unearths telling details about U.S.-Cuba relations and present-day realities on the island. He also lays out the next American president’s options and challenges regarding Cuba now that Fidel has exited the stage.

Reese Erlich is co-author of the best-selling book Target Iraq: What the News Media Didn’t Tell You. In 2001, he produced a one-hour radio documentary, “The Struggle for Iran,” hosted by Walter Cronkite; he was also a segment producer for the public radio series Crossing East, which received a Peabody Award in 2007. He reports regularly for National Public Radio, Latino USA, Radio Deutche Welle, Australian Broadcasting Corp. Radio, and Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Radio. He also writes for Mother Jones, the San Francisco Chronicle, the St. Petersburg Times, the Dallas Morning News, and the Chicago Tribune.

Wheelchair accessible.

“Combines good investigative reporting with sharp analysis … a must-read for anyone interested in U.S. Cuba policy.” —Walter Cronkite

“Reese Erlich has cast a wide journalistic net for diverse voices to help us understand Cuba at this crucial moment in its history. This powerful, personal narrative is a very effective vehicle for traveling through the Cuban story and exploring that fascinating country’s contemporary challenges.” —David Brancaccio, host/senior editor, NOW on PBS

Will Health Insurance Companies
Continue Bleeding Us?
Don Bechler, Single Payer Now

Tuesday, January 20, 1 PM
Unitarian-Universalist Center
1187 Franklin St (at Geary), SF
Fireside Room
Free, wheelchair accessible

Obama, Congressional Democrats, and a powerful coalition of business, some unions, and some healthcare advocates are behind a plan for covering the uninsured by expanding, regulating, and subsidizing private insurance.

This is exactly what we do not need. Despite the media hype, this plan has been a disaster in Massachusetts. (See below) We need Single Payer: equal, comprehensive, affordable, and accessible healthcare for everyone, delivered by today’s doctors, clinics, and hospitals, and paid for by a publicly-accountable government agency. Insurance companies are nowhere in the picture.

Don Bechler, of Single Payer Now, will report on the national and state campaigns for single payer healthcare.

The good news is that there’s been two big advances in national organizing for genuine single-payer and US House bill HR 676. The first was a national meeting of AFL-CIO pro-single-payer unions in Washington. The second was a national meeting of pro-single-payer health advocates in Chicago. Don was a key player at both meetings.

The other good news is that in California, SB 840 is entering a new legislative phase with Mark Leno as chief author. Leno emphasizes that even if SB 840 passes and is signed, it will face a state ballot challenge from private insurers, so we need to prepare for a grass-roots campaign.

We will focus on how we can take advantage of these opportunities.

Event is free, wheelchair accessible.

As the economy is crashing and capitalism is crumbling under its own contradictions, we are starting to create a more just and sustainable economy from the roots up, The Really Really Free Market is an attempt to gather and share resources, skills, food, entertainment all for free. We are creating an alternative that reveals the myth of scarcity, helps redistribute resources to those that need them, and empowers everyone to participate in its creation. We are living lighter on the Earth by recycling resources through the community and not shipping them around the world...and not exploiting workers in poor countries for cheap goods. The RRFM movement is taking off with markets popping up around the Bay Area, around the country, and even in other countries. So come, bring any skill, bring food, a poem, a song, books, clothes - anything you think others might want and please help clean up. To start off A Season for Nonviolence (January 30-April 4), we are showing this inspiring film that tells the story of one man's impassioned and improbable quest to create an internationally recognized day of peace and cease-fire, observed on a fixed calendar date each year.
A Season for Nonviolence is a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots campaign dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this international event honors their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world.
Free; wheelchair accessible. Free popcorn.

A Comic Monologue with Original Songs Written and Performed by Wes "Scoop" Nisker
Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church, 55 Eckley Lane, Walnut Creek, CA 94596
Friends! Earthlings! Humans! Who are we, why are we here, and how did we get into the mess we're in? Is there any hope for us and our species? In this comic monologue, Wes Nisker explores the foolish human condition and the joys and sorrows of living in the modern age. He will reveal the secrets of the Big Bang and anti-matter, explore the issues of war, species extinction and global warming, and expose the true heart of the New Age spiritual movement. Mr. Nisker places today's headlines in the context of biological evolution and all of human history, and thereby offers us the relief and laughter that only vast perspectives can bring. This is comedy for the rest of us.
